A program evaluation of a multimedia educational tool for fluid mechanics instruction assessed student learning outcomes, engagement metrics, and the effectiveness of interactive CD-ROM-based learning compared to traditional instructional methods.
An instructional team needed to know whether a multimedia fluid mechanics tool actually improved learning compared with traditional instruction, or simply increased engagement.
Learning outcome measures and engagement metrics were compared between multimedia and traditional instruction groups, with prior attainment controlled for and open student feedback analyzed as themes.
The tool was adopted for the topics where it demonstrably helped and kept out of the topics where it did not, with the navigation issues fixed first.
