    Internet Use

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded a project to explore the effect of internet use on perceived performance. With the increasing integration of technology into educational and professional environments, the study examined how digital connectivity influences productivity, learning outcomes, and self-reported achievement.

    The decision behind the question

The National Science Foundation funded work on whether internet use affects perceived performance, as digital connectivity became inseparable from study and work.

    Data and methods used

Survey measures of internet use, context of use, and self-reported achievement were modelled together, with relationship analysis separating the direct effect of use from effects travelling through study or work habits.

    What the analysis found

    • •Total time online had little direct relationship with perceived performance; the purpose of use did.
    • •Effects travelled largely through changes in study and work habits rather than acting directly.
    • •Self-reported achievement diverged from measured outcomes for a definable group of respondents.

    What changed as a result

Reporting shifted from time-based measures to purpose-of-use measures, and the gap between perceived and measured achievement was flagged for follow-up research.
